Each part of the coast suits a different kind of trip. Here's how they compare.

Vegetarian Festival week: going to Old Town from a beach villa

The festival runs 10 to 18 October this year, with the night procession on Sunday 11 October.

The Nine Emperor Gods festival is centred on Phuket Old Town and more than 40 Chinese shrines across the island. The pole-raising ceremony opened it on the evening of 9 October, and street processions run every morning from 11 to 18 October.

Processions start early, so leave a west-coast villa before dawn if you want a good spot. Wear white if you can, bring earplugs for the firecrackers, and keep a respectful distance from the mediums.

Food is the gentler way in. Stalls flagged with yellow banners serve vegetarian dishes all week, and Ranong Road in town is the busiest strip.

Heathrow to Phuket direct from 18 October

Virgin Atlantic's new seasonal route is the only non-stop from Heathrow to Phuket.

Flights leave London on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and return from Phuket on Thursdays, Saturdays and Mondays, on a Boeing 787-9.

The airport sits at the north end of the west coast, so Nai Yang is minutes away and Bang Tao and Laguna are a short drive. Kamala is a little further south.

If you're flying in on a Sunday, book a Sunday arrival on the villa too. Several of our homes take any arrival day outside peak weeks.

Laguna Phuket Triathlon weekend, Sunday 15 November

The 32nd edition starts and finishes in Laguna, right next to most of our Bang Tao homes.

The signature race is a 1.8 km swim, 50 km bike and 12 km run, with sprint, relay and duathlon categories alongside. Online registration closes on Sunday 8 November.

Roads around Laguna and Cherng Talay are busy on race morning. Staying in Bang Tao means you can walk or cycle to the start instead of driving in.
